Lifting is an action which can be done by humanoid class units to allies, enemies or Geo Symbols. To lift something a unit must be in one of the 4 adjacent squares which share a side. Lifting cannot be done merely by sharing a corner. Monsters can be lifted but cannot lift characters.

Lifting allows for various actions to be performed such as stacking multiple characters and forming a Tower of characters, or Throwing characters to a better position on the map in order to reach far away locations in less turns. It is also possible to create towers in order to launch a specified character even further away on the map.

Geo Panels with the "No Lifting" effect prohibits characters standing on them from being lifted.

Being lifted protects units from harm. They cannot be targeted. However if the unit holding them dies, they are dropped down. In the case if a 3+ tower, the 2nd from the bottom is now the bottom and the 3rd is still protected.

While being lifted, a unit can not do anything in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories introduced the Tower Attack which allows all characters in a tower to attack an enemy. However, they are still unable to preform other actions such as moving or using special techniques such as spells.

Lifting is the traditional setup for Throwing, in which a character throws another character to a better position on the map in order to reach far away locations in less turns. In later games when Receive was added the receiver could throw without having lifted, but it was still a Lifter who initiated things. In Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance, monsters can do a Mon-toss move to throw units, but can not otherwise lift units.

In earlier Disgaea games it is only possible to throw characters in a straight line. Since Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness characters can throw towards positions that are not aligned to the character's axis.

Characters can only throw a certain distance away, which is hidden in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, but is shown along with other movement stats since Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories. Height is also an issue. Presumably it is limited by the Jump height of the unit being lifted.
