Geo Effects are special bonuses granted by certain panels of a map.
Geo Panels and Geo Symbols
Geo Panels are sets of bright, colored panels that appear on each map. Geo Symbols are special colored crystals containing a different Geo Effect each. When a Geo Symbol is placed on a Geo Panel, all panels of the same color as that one gain the effect of the symbol and will grant said effect to units standing on it.
Geo Symbols are objects that can be moved or destroyed, allowing the player to manipulate the conditions of the battlefield.
Disgaea 3 and Disgaea 4 replace Geo Symbols for objects called Geo Blocks. They serve the exact same function as Symbols, with additional rules:
- Units can stand on the blocks, gaining their effect without the need of Geo Panels. If a unit stands on a stack of blocks they will gain all their effects.
- If 2 or more blocks of the same color spawn next to each other they can't be lifted or moved.
- If 2 non-adjacent blocks of the same color are moved together they will disappear, and this will spread as a chain reaction to any other blocks of the same color connected by adjacency.
- Units standing on a block that gets destroyed will fall, taking damage in the process.
Destroying a symbol standing in a panel of a different color than it causes a Geo Chain, where all panels of that color begin exploding one by one, changing to the color of the destroyed symbol(or disappearing if the symbol was transparent) and damaging units standing on them.
Symbols hit by an explosion will be instantly destroyed, and will then create their own set of explosions. Thus, it's possible to create a chain reaction of explosions, with each set dealing more damage than the last.
The damage caused by explosions is (2*SymbolLevel + 3)*ChainSize (though Disgaea 5 changed the damage to 5 + MaxHP*4%*ChainSize), and if you manage to make all panels disappear(by use of transparent symbols) a giant explosion will happen, dealing the same damage as the last set of explosions to all enemies on the map.
During a Geo Chain a counter will appear, increasing with each individual panel explosion by an amount equals to the current chain size. Once the chain is over, the Bonus Gauge will fill up depending on how big the counter was.
