Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless (魔界戦記ディスガイア7, Makai Senki Disugaia Sevun, literally: Netherworld Battle Chronicle Disgaea Seven) is the eigth main title in the Disgaea series.

Plot[]

Set in a series of small Netherworlds collectively known as Hinomoto, a world that mimics the stylings of Ancient Japan during its transition between the Edo period (1603-1868) and the Meiji restoration (1868-1912). The plot and stylings are heavily inspired by the clashing cultures of the two period of japanese history and both parody and reflect the changing attitudes and behaviours of the times.

The plot starts with end of the age of warriors following the military take-over of the Shogunate by a demon known as Demmodore Opener, following his victory over the strongest warrior of the time, Mugai Zesshosai and his followers. The story follows the intertwining stories of both Fuji, a former apprentice of Mugai and now wandering warrior, whose story is made to mirror the view of a Samurai of the time with the collapse of their culture and relevance in it; and Pirilika, an Otaku for Hinomoto culture who arrives in just in time to watch the culture she had come to idolise from the movies she had seen of it be replaced with the more metropolitan styling of the Meiji era, parodying the westernisation of Japan during that time period and the general japan otakus found in the west in current times.

Pirilika ends up being coerced into hiring Fuji to be her guardian during her visit and the two work together to collect the Seven Founding Weapons and combat the corruption of the Shogunate.

Gameplay[]

Disgaea 7 carries on in its gameplay styling from Disgaea 6, using grid based Strategy RPG combat produced through the Unreal engine

It has replaced the combo attack system with a more simplified combo system and lack magichange and character fusion of previous titles.

There are two new mechanics for the series in Disgaea 7, the first are the Hell Gauge, usable by character armed with Infernal Treasure that act in a similar way to Overload skills from Disgaea 5, where the character can active a super form after the requirements have been met granting them a stat boost and a specific boost to their abilities from the weapon in question. The other new mechanic being Jumbofication in which a character is able to blow themself up to Kaiju size proportions, when the rage meter is full, and perform giant battles against other Jumbo characters and rain down death upon the battle field with boosted stats, renewed health and special jumbo abilities for a few turns. This plays in a similar manner to the Gigantamax from Pokémon Sword and Shield.
